Bass of the Week: Tangente Instruments Weaves Frode Berg Signature

Tangente Instruments Weaves Frode Berg Bass

This week, we’re taking a look at another killer instrument by Tangente Instruments. His latest build is a version of his Weaves model made as a signature bass for Frode Berg.

“Our goal was a blend between acoustic and electric bass. Frode plays both electric bass as well as double bass; so his dream was having a compact model with the feels and nuances of an acoustic instrument,” luthier Matias Catueño explains.

The bass has a heavily chambered mahogany body with a thick flamed eucalyptus top. Its five-piece maple neck is fitted with a wenge fretboard and continues the eucalyptus theme in its inlays.

“You’ll notice there are no knobs in sight,” Catueño continues. “He specifically wanted a minimalistic design where the sound had to come from the fingers…if the sound wasn’t what he wanted, he needed to change his way of playing, not the EQ. We included an internal three-band EQ just to fine-tune the sound, but it’s all wrapped inside the electronics cavity, so it’s hidden in plain sight.”
