Back in 2019, bass guru Norm Stockton launched a web series called “Grooves & Sushi” in which he called top-shelf musicians to make music and commune over a meal. Now the project has been released as an album.

We’ve reached #1, and this one is extra special to us this year. Nine-year-old Ellen Alaverdyan caught our attention in 2021, and the attention of a lot more people. She is the #1 Reader Favorite Bassist for 2021.

No surprise, Marcus Miller is another bassist who routinely lands on the annual Reader Favorite Bassists lists here. Thanks to some amazing videos (and other news), Marcus lands at the #2 spot.

We first featured Charles Berthoud back in 2015. Over the years, we’ve been amazed by his work. In 2021, Charles made it a lot of fun, so it is no surprise to us that he made the list this year (at #3).

This is where the 2021 Reader Favorite Bassists list gets interesting. While the names so far are some of the biggest in the world of bass, the web has given us exposure to many other talented bassists. One of those is Julia Hofer, who lands at #4.

The impact of Jaco Pastorius on the bass playing community is still strong, and in 2021, we had some special articles to share featuring him. As a result, Jaco returns to the Reader Favorite Bassists, at the #5 spot.

Tony Levin is another bassist who routinely makes the annual Reader Favorite Bassists list, and he does so once again. In 2021, Tony hit the road with The Levin Brothers, was part of the return of Liquid Tension Experiment, announced his Three of a Perfect Pair camp, released a book, and more.

Victor is a mainstay on the Reader Favorites lists, and 2021 was no exception. From performance to education to publishing a new book, Vic stayed busy. He lands at the #7 spot on this year’s list.

We first shared a video by Vulfpeck in 2011 (“Beastly“), and we were instant fans of the band and Joe Dart. It took a few years for Joe to hit the Reader Favorite list, and he’s been a mainstay since. He’s #8 on this year’s list.

Billy Sheehan is no stranger to the annual Reader Favorite Bassists lists, and this year, he made it once again. See why Billy lands at the #9 slot on this year’s list.

It seems rare to go to Youtube and not find a video with MonoNeon. From his solo efforts to his work with Scary Goldings, Scary Pockets, and Ghost-Note, the bassist is everywhere. MonoNeon makes this year’s Reader Favorite Bassists list at #10.

Magnus Sjöquist is known for his work on the U-Bass, but his latest video is totally different. He won the International Bass Competition, and the first prize: a Boden Bass. The combo of the bass and his home in Sweden led him to write this song.
