Video Premiere: Mono Means One’s “It Covered The Sky”

Consider the Source bassist John Ferrara has released several amazing solo albums, but today we’re proud to help premiere the first song from his new project Mono Means One. “It Covered The Sky” features his incredible compositions and tapping technique. “The songs created in ‘Mono Means One’ are primarily tapping pieces of mine that I’ve fully orchestrated by utilizing a myriad of bass techniques and effects,” he explains. “When I compose tapping pieces, I always have melodies, harmonies, and drum parts going on in my head, though I can’t always express all of them. So this project allows me to pull from some of the weird techniques I’ve developed over time to see these ideas through to full compositions.”

If you’ve listened to his solo bass records, you know his sense of music is almost orchestral. The way the harmony moves and the way he expands on motifs implies a larger context, and Mono Means One is his way to more fully realize his ideas.

“The inspiration for this project came from desperately wanting to be able to compose full band or orchestral pieces on the bass the same way a pianist would on piano,” he says. “All of the pieces in this project are ones I can hear for a band. In “It Covered the Sky,” I use tapping, volume swells, fingerstyle, and more to create a broad sonic palette by masking the instruments role and tone.”
