Last year, we had the chance to catch up with Gov’t Mule’s Kevin Scott, who let us in on the fact that his solo project WAXpaper had an album in the works. Now he’s revealed the project’s self-titled debut will be released on April 26th through his label, 29th Street Editions.

WAXpaper was spawned from Scott’s weekly improv sessions when he was living in Atlanta in the early 2010’s. The 16-track collection began after a six-hour improv session at Diamond Street Studios with drummer Darren Stanley and keyboardist Spencer Pope. Over time, more musicians were added to the mix: New Orleans-based vocalist Sasha Masakowski, guitarists Emil Werstler and Carter Arrington, and keyboardist Zach Piles.

The result is an expansive, exploratory set of music that defies categorization. Scott and company dig deep into their many sonic influences with hints of jazz, metal, electronica, reggae, and more. The grooves are heavy with lots of gritty soundscapes often juxtaposed with Masakowski’s beautiful singing. Of course, the whole album is pinned together by incredible bass lines and killer tones.

Fans can get a taste of the upcoming album with the first single, “JMAKN06.”

”After spending years visiting and being inspired by Jamaica on various tours and on my own, this is my weird take on dub and dancehall — but in a darker, Atlanta-gothic inspired sense,” he told Relix. “It showcases the whole WAXpaper crew, and also our combination of live-recordings and samples and overdubbed sounds.”

“JMAKN06” is streaming now via iTunes, Spotify, and more.
