Soul Asylum Keeps the “Runaway Train” Rolling in a Live KEXP Session
Until today, I didn’t realize Soul Asylum was still together. Their recent KEXP studio session, recorded on October 7, 2024, and released on December 17, showcases a band that’s grown without losing sight of what made them vital in the first place.
It’s no surprise that “Runaway Train” was part of the set. A mega-hit in 1992, the song resonated with millions of fans. But today I learned Soul Asylum isn’t stuck in the past — they’re still releasing new music. Their 13th studio album, Slowly But Shirley, produced by Steve Jordan, dropped on September 27, 2024 to critical acclaim. Jordan, who also worked on their 1990 album And the Horse They Rode In On, brings a fresh yet familiar touch to their sound.
Soul Asylum’s current line up includes Dave Pirner and Ryan Smith on vocals/guitars, Jeremy Tappero on vocals/bass, and Jerry Pentecost on drums.
