Bass of the Week: Meet the Anachronist, 13 Ghosts’ Handmade Marvel from Germany

13 Ghosts The Anachronist Bass

Thorsten Behrens of 13 Ghosts shared his latest build with us, and it looks like a beast. The Anachronist is a multi-scale bass featuring a retro design but a modern pickup system. Behrens handcrafted the four-stringer in Germany.

We’ll let him take it from here.

“In terms of construction, the Anachronist features an alder body paired with a bolt-on maple neck and an ebony fretboard. It’s built with a 33.5? to 34.5? multi-scale fretboard, offering improved ergonomics and better intonation. The 17 3/4 frets give plenty of space for no treble
expression,” Behrens shares. “The most interesting aspect is the unique multi-coil pickup system. It consists of eight pickups, each with 7800 windings of AWG42 wire and 6mm magnets, mounted on an aluminum base plate. Each pickup can be moved along the strings over a wide range, allowing for a high degree of tonal flexibility. The pickup system is complemented by a passive electronic setup, which features a 12 position capacity switch, including an mute position. The switch can be used to adjust the resonance frequency of the pickups, adding another layer of sonic customization. The balance pot gives control over the blend between the bridge and neck pickup sets. Another feature of the Anachronist is its D-extension. The unique design allows the two frets to be freely adjusted, similar to a bridge. Thus, it can be installed in basses with different scales.”
