Ray Brown’s First Full Biography Dives into His Life, Legacy, and Jazz Mastery

Ray Brown His Life and Music FB

You can’t talk about jazz bass without talking about Ray Brown. The prolific virtuoso set the standard for bassists with his tone, time, and attitude while helping to shape the sound of bebop and beyond. Aside from his straight-ahead playing, he was a busy session player who played on hits like James Brown’s “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and film scores.

While there are interviews and numerous stories about him on the internet, a full-length biography on him hasn’t been published until now.

Ray Brown: His Life and Music is written by bassist/educator Jay Sweet and published by Equinox. The 310-page book digs into his history, from his early life and professional beginnings to his reign as one of the most in-demand players in the world. That includes his time with the Canadian piano great Oscar Peterson from 1949 to 1965.

“The Peterson Trio would become one of the most lucrative acts in jazz history. After leaving Peterson, Ray Brown worked as a Los Angeles studio musician and played on numerous commercial recordings but never abandoned swing-based jazz,” Equinox writes. “During these years, he also became involved as a manager, promoter, and teacher. Throughout the mid-1970s until he died in 2002, Ray Brown remained one of the most excellent practitioners of mainstream jazz during a time when some elements of the music moved far away from this style. With so many jazz musicians from his generation succumbing to drugs and tragedy, Ray Brown’s longevity and professionalism are a testament to his talents, intelligence, and professionalism.”

Ray Brown: His Life and Music is available now via Amazon in hardcoverand Kindle editions.

  1. I truly wish I could go back in time!
I met Ray as a student at B.I.T. in Hollywood back in 1979. I was just a kid but Ray shared something about his musicianship that stays with me today.
