Remembering Malcolm‑Jamal Warner Through His Powerful Final Set at The Cabaret

Malcolm Jamal Warner beloved actor, bassist, and bandleader, recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy that extended well beyond the screen. In one of his most recent performances, Warner took the stage at The Cabaret alongside guitarist Miles Long and Broadway star Saycon Sengbloh to deliver a powerful rendition of Frankie Beverly and Maze’s classic, “Joy and Pain.”

The performance showcases Warner’s ability to blend music and message. Over a laid-back groove with deep feeling, Sengbloh brings a soaring, soulful vocal and Miles Long lays down tasteful guitar lines. The chemistry is undeniable, and the arrangement channels the heart of the original while adding a fresh emotional layer.

This moment, captured on video, highlights Warner’s dedication to groove, storytelling, and connection—core threads that ran through his artistic life. It’s a performance that now carries even more resonance and reflection.

While I did not Malcom except from the Cosby and a few years older I can say that I grew up watching him and enjoying the cast. I respect his manly maturity as he grace many presences of music and film I can can feel his absence in the universe by his early departure. May he rest in peace.
