The Bass Magazine Awards Return This Week Remember John Patitucci’s Standout 2024 Performance

I still think about that night last year when I was at the Bass Magazine Awards at The Observatory in Santa Ana watching John Patitucci play. I shot the video of him leading his band through those beautiful lines and rich tone while guitarist Adam Rogers wove in and out with those lyrical, conversational lines on his guitar. It was one of those moments that reminded me why I love being in the room for this music.

This week the awards are back on January 22 at The Observatory in Santa Ana as part of an expanded NAMM week of events. The Bass Magazine Awards are celebrating some of the most influential players in the low end including Les Claypool of Primus, Mike Dirnt of Green Day, Marcus Miller, Laura Lee of Khruangbin and Blu DeTiger with presenters and performances from some of the biggest names in bass music.

It was a great time capturing last year’s energy and excitement and I am fired up to see how this year’s show unfolds. If you are headed down or watching the buzz online get ready because the biggest night in bass is happening again and it is going to be unforgettable.

With all respect for the brilliant bassplayers that I can’t reach at their toes: in my humble opinion Modini Dey and Esperanza Spalding should be in the line-up! They flattened the technical difference between women and men without loosing their appreciated female supremacy!
