Federico Malaman Trio Brings Warmth and Melody to “Song for Marco”

Its been a while since Federico has released a video on his youtube channel so I was very excited to see “Song for Marco” from the Federico Malaman Trio.  This perfomance has an uplifting feel and there is plenty happening inside the groove.  Federico takes more of a supporting role here on his 5 string Mayones, he builds a solid pocket and adds shape to the harmony without crowding the piano. His tone has a bit of width to it, possibly a light chorus in the mix, which gives the lines some dimension.

What stands out most is the balance. The trio listens. The dynamics rise and settle naturally. It is a strong reminder that great bass playing is not always about stepping forward. Sometimes it is about making the whole thing feel right.

Give it a spin and check out how the bass locks with the drums while the piano carries the story.
