Mark Marxon sent this video to me recently (on his birthday!) Mark arranged Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” as a chill solo bass piece – complete with some smooth lines, chords and harmonics. Really enjoyed this one. Nice work, Mark – and happy belated birthday.

We’re used to seeing Miki Santamaria as a solo bassist, but we know he can lay it down (and does) in plenty of band settings. Today is Meshell Ndegeocello’s birthday, so we wanted to celebrate with another video by the talented bassist/vocalist. In this clip, Meshell performs a cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. The song was written for Nina Simone, who recorded it in 1964. A year later, The Animals released their hit version. Meshell makes it groove.

Bassist Elin Sandberg and vocalist Tracy Robertson took Chick Corea’s “Spain” (with lyrics by Al Jarreau), and turned it into this impressive bass and vocals duet. The intro is from Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez”. Wow!

Simone Masina has shared another terrific video with us of his project, known as Peekaboom. Here the duo of Simone and vocalist Angelica Lubian perform “Bye Bye Blackbird”. As an added bonus, Angelica takes over on double bass while Simone solos on his bass guitar.
