Lake Street Dive: Lola

Lake Street Dive: Lola

I stumbled upon this video from 90.9 The Bridge, and I was glad I did. Lake Street Dive performed their own great version of The Kinks’ tune, “Lola,” with Bridget Kearney holding down the low end and backing vocals. We dig this! How about you?

Stuart Clayton: Bass Lick of the Week #2

Stuart Clayton: Bass Lick of the Week #2

When we shared Stuart Clayton’s first Bass Lick of the Week, it was a huge hit. Here’s the second installment. Stuart shares the background on this lick: “This week’s exercise is a fingerstyle line that uses major and minor tenth intervals to imply chordal parts alongside a bassline. It was performed on a Fender Precision Bass, strung with flatwound strings.”...

Danny Ziemann Quintet: SKJ

Double bassist Danny Ziemann gets a huge tone while leading his quintet on the classic Milt Jackson tune “SKJ”. He also kicks off the solo section with a super lyrical solo to set up the song’s vibe.

Ron Blair: Recording The Bass on Tom Petty’s “American Girl”

Ever since Tom Petty passed away, I’ve been watching tons of his videos on YouTube. There are tons of great performances, but this Reverb.com interview with Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair stuck out. Blair talks about how they figured out the melodic bass line to “American Girl” from the band’s self-titled debut. “[I started] to play all these things up high,...

First Fragment: Le Serment de Tsion

First Fragment, featuring bass monster Dominic “Forest” Lapointe, has just released a new music video for their song “Le Serment de Tsion”, and it’s brutal. Lapointe kills it with a biting tone and insane chops to add extra fire to the track.

Vulfpeck: Birds of a Feather, We Rock Together

Vulfpeck: Birds of a Feather, We Rock Together

Vulfpeck has announced their 2017 album, Mr Finish Line and released the first track from the upcoming release. Joe Dart lays down a groovy line behind this mellow tune, which also appears to feature Jack Stratton on the pancakes. For more on the album (and how to get it), check out Vulfpeck’s website..

King Curtis: Soul Serenade

King Curtis: Soul Serenade

I love all the footage from this 1971 performance by King Curtis & The Kingpins. The whole band is fantastic, and Jerry Jemmott shows us how it’s done. Here’s “Soul Serenade”. Be sure to also check out “Ridin’ Thumb” (my favorite of this excellent concert) and “Memphis Soul Stew“.

Han Beyli: Jeyran

Han Beyli: Jeyran

I just discovered the music of Han Beyli thanks to this video. Han recently went into the studio at Berklee to record his original composition, “Jeyran,” which offers up some tremendous bass, vocals, horns, and more.

Will Lee’s Family: Georgy Porgy

Will Lee’s Family: Georgy Porgy

In 2012, Will Lee performed at the Cotton Club in Tokyo, along with Steve Gadd, Chuck Loeb, Giulio Carmassi, and Oli Rockberger. Here’s a tune from that set, with the band covering Toto’s hit song, “Georgy Porgy.”

Curtis Mayfield: Freddie’s Dead (Live)

Curtis Mayfield: Freddie’s Dead (Live)

Here’s some old school funky goodness from a live, early ’70s performance of Curtis Mayfield and his band performing “Freddie’s Dead.” Joseph “Lucky” Scott puts on a master class of some textbook groove on this one.

Bob Reynolds: Can’t Wait for Perfect

Bob Reynolds: Can’t Wait for Perfect

I recently discovered tenor saxophonist Bob Reynolds and his band on a recent Youtube binge, and I was glad I did. Here’s the band performing at the Blue Whale Jazz Club in Los Angeles, California, on January 21, 2016. The tune, “Can’t Wait for Perfect,” is from Reynolds’ album, Guitar Band and features some groovy lines by bassist Kaveh Rastegar....
