Mr. DanZ: Proto Cosmos
I’ve never heard of Mr. DanZ until today, but I was glad I found them. Here’s the group – with bassist Ben Shepherd laying it down, slapping, soloing and jumping – performing their cover of Alan Pasqua’s “Proto Cosmos”. Tight.
Franck Hermanny: All Bass Cover of Greg Howe’s “Jump Start”
Bassist Franck Hermanny put together this video to demo recording multiple bass tracks on video (started out as three, then became four). For the demo, he chose to do his all-bass cover of Greg Howe’s “Jump Start” (with some drums in the mix). While it isn’t a complete song performance, what he does is quite impressive.
moe: Timmy Tucker, Live
Here’s a fun tune and video featuring the bass work of Rob Derhak with moe. The tune is “Timmy Tucker”, and it starts off just right. This performance took place at moe.down 11 in Mohawk, NY back in September, 2010. The tune is from the band’s 1994 album, Headseed.
Andrea Lombardini: Brian Eno’s “By This River” for Solo Bass
I’m on a bit of a solo bass kick lately, in case you didn’t notice. And in a mellow mood today. This video served up the perfect combo. Andrea Lombardini took Brian Eno’s “By This River” and arranged it for solo bass, with the help of some “bottle neck” styling, thanks to a glass he said “you would use for...
Huw Foster: Coldplay’s “Trouble” Bass and Vocals Cover
I love Huw Foster’s approach to solo bass arrangements. Here’s another great example of his playing and musicianship on this bass-focused version of Coldplay’s “Trouble”. Huw is joined by Joe Jacquest on vocals.
Crash Kings: Hey Bulldog
It has been nearly two years since we first featured the band known as the Crash Kings. We were immediately drawn in by their story first, and then the music made us big time fans. Bassist Mike Beliveau and his brother Tony (keyboards and vocals), formed this band to create a big rock sound without a guitar. And boy did...
Fabienne Gilbert: “Come On Come Over” Bass Play-Along
We don’t feature a ton of bass play-alongs here, but when Francis Allen shared this one, it was too darn funky to ignore. Here’s Fabienne Gilbert laying it down on Jaco Pastorius’ fun and funky tune, “Come On Come Over”.
Cream: I’m So Glad (1968)
Today is Jack Bruce‘s 70th birthday, so we’re celebrating with some old school Cream. This footage of the tune “I’m So Glad” is from Cream’s “final farewell” tour in November, 1968. The extended solo break features some great bass by Jack, and lots of focus on his playing. Happy birthday, Jack!
Adam Ben Ezra: “Dear Prudence” Bass Cover
Adam Ben Ezra doesn’t need a lot to produce his music. But he does an awful lot, in a most impressive way. Here’s Adam taking on the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” with his upright bass, a loop recorder and his voice… live.
Cheikh Ndoye Project: Below Level
Having more than one bass in a band has been done many times before but when it happens, it’s often with the purpose of highlighting one of the basses as a solo instrument. In this video it’s more about the groove as bassist and leading man Cheikh Ndoye shares the bass role with David Segal.
Jesús Rico Pérez: “Reproches” for Solo Bass
Bassist Jesús Rico Pérez shared this solo bass performance of this tune, “Reproches”. He asked us: “what do you think, is it good?” We thought it was fantastic, and we’re happy to share it with you. Jesús performs it on his 5-string bass with piccolo strings and alternate tuning (from low to high: G, Bb, F, Bb, F.). He said...
James Brown with Bootsy Collins: Brother Rapp (Paris, 1971)
Here’s some terrific old school music for you, with an 18 year old Bootsy Collins laying it down for James Brown. This performance of “Brother Rapp” was filmed in 1971, like another video we featured of The Godfather of Soul with Bootsy from the same year.
