I’ve officially spent way too much time watching videos by Guido Ponzini. As difficult as it was to pick a video to feature, this one has some nifty fretless bass work on one of Ponzini’s original compositions, “Chattin’ with Barbarella Bennett”.

Progressive bassist Chris Buck is wrapping up a new CD with drummer Virgil Donati and guitarist Brett Garsed, tentatively scheduled for a release this spring. This video was filmed in 2009, with the band performing “3 Crows”, one of the tunes slated for the new album. Buckle up!

Here’s an electrifying clip of Best New Artist Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding with vocal phenom Bobby McFerrin performing at the Grammy pre-telecast ceremony, which they co-hosted. Esperanza’s playing is a great mix of jazzy and funky, and McFerrin deserves bonus points for picking up the bass line while she takes a solo halfway through.

Here’s Evan Marien performing a solo bass version of the title track from his album, released in 2009. I’ve always enjoyed the studio version, and this version offers a nice build up thanks to the layers and looping.

In this video, Jaco Pastorius takes a solo during a Weather Report appearance at Berliner Jazztage ’79. This was broadcast as “Focus on Jazz” on German TV. Jaco covers a lot of musical ground, including Wayne Shorter’s “Dolores”.

This bassist is rocking his bass version of Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary”. Does anyone know who this is? Update: the bassist is “Lomanis”

Here’s a great clip of Doug Johns performing one of his infamous bass solos at the drum set. Doug calls it the “monkey show”. He starts with a rendition of the Jaco Pastorius tune “Continuum” before launching into an all out funk attack. The video was shot at One Mind Studios in 2009.
