Tommy Shannon with Johnny Winter: Be Careful With a Fool
Live on Danish TV in 1970, Johnny Winter performs with bassist Tommy Shannon and Uncle John Turner on drums. It isn’t flashy, but Shannon is just a blues groovin’ machine.
Justin Raines: Freestyle Bass
Bassist Justin Raines is bringing it in this improv performance during a past NAMM event, performing on an MTD bass. Raines has played for Bobby Perry and RAIN, JoJo, GospelChops, and others.
Stanley Clarke: Hot Fun (1977)
Oh yeah! Some vintage Stanley Clarke for you today, from a 1977 performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Hot Fun!
Doug Wimbish: Quasimodo (Live)
Here’s bassist / one man band / human sound system Doug Wimbish taking a live solo, “Quasimodo”. The performance took place at Paradiso in Amsterdam in 1999, and filmed for the TV program “Moondive”, which also included Peter van Bergen (saxophone), Huib Emmer (electronics/guitar), Stefan Robbers (electronics), Gerard Bouwhuis (piano) and Alison Goldfrapp (vocals).
Legends: Marcus Miller Solo
Last week, we featured a video with Steve Gadd and Will Lee. This time around, Gadd is playing with Marcus Miller, who takes an extended solo in this clip. The performance is from Legends: Live at Montreux 1997, and also features Eric Clapton, Joe Sample and David Sanborn.
Jaco Pastorius: Three Views Of A Secret
This video isn’t likely new for many of us, but always nice to watch… Jaco Pastorius and his Word of Mouth band performing “Three Views of a Secret” live in Japan in 1982. As time goes on, this is still one of my favorite compositions, if not the favorite. Happy Sunday.
Charnett Moffett with Stanley Jordan: Autumn Leaves
Charnett Moffett lays down more of a running bass line behind tapping virtuoso Stanley Jordan before showing off his own finger-busting solo on the jazz standard “Autumn Leaves”.
Victor Wooten & Steve Smith: Double Espresso
Another great bass/drum duo performance… this time by Victor Wooten and Steve Smith. The performance took place at the Drummers Collective in November, 2002. Smith admits the two only had five minutes to prepare for the performance. Doesn’t seem fair. Part 1: Part 2:
Edgar Meyer: Froglike
Words aren’t enough. Here’s upright master Edgar Meyer playing “Froglike”, from his album Work in Progress (sadly, the album is out of print).
John Entwistle: “Summertime Blues” Live Isolated Bass
This is cool… John Entwistle‘s isolated bass track of “Summertime Blues” (with just a touch of vocals spilling over into the bass channel). This is from by The Who.
Bootsy Collins: Bernie’s Interlude/ Funkentelechy
Here’s Bootsy Collins and his band in a live performance in 1998, performing tunes from Fresh Outta ‘P’ University. Bernie Worrell (keyboards) is featured big time in this piece, backed by Collins, Gary Shider and Lawrence Cornett on guitars; Gary Cooper, April Wood, Ianaya Davis, Robert Harding and Henry Benefield on vocals; Frank Waddy on drums; Rick Gardner on trumpet;...
Tony Levin: Live Jam
At the 2009 Bass Player Live, Tony Levin performed at the Ernie Ball Music Man booth, with the help of two drummers. Tony is using his famous “Funk Fingers” during the performance. He really gets going in part 2, with some Liquid Tension Experiment. Part 1: Part 2:
