Reader Spotlight: Tiago Coimbra

Tiago CoimbraMeet Tiago Coimbra a bassist who has an impressive resume and education spanning twenty years. Tiago is No Treble’s reader in the spotlight for the week of September 16, 2013.

Bio:

Born in Brasilia in 1980, Tiago Coimbra has lived in Brazil, Washington D.C., Guatemala and Cambridge UK. He started playing guitar and drums through the influence of his brother and settled on the bass as his instrument at the age of twelve.

Tiago’s first gig was at the age of 13 with Beware the Moon, a rock band he played with for the next four years. With Beware the Moon, he played gigs, festivals and studio sessions.

After graduating from ACM Tiago won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston USA, starting his studies there in September 1999. While in college, Tiago was involved in a broad range of projects, including performing and recording with Spontaneous and Hiromi’s Explosion Trio.

He has also studied with Oscar Stagnaro, Anthony Vitti, Bruce Gertz, Matthew Garrison, Abraham Laboriel, Walter Beasley, Ed Tomassi and Kenwood Dennard.

Tiago is now touring the world, recording and performing with various bands including the Gavin Harrison and 05Ric Band, soul singer Myles Sanko, Resolution 88 and professional cover band Swagger.

I am in a few bands, the most prominent is the Gavin harrison and 05Ric Band. We are going on tour in november around Europe. I also play in Myles Sanko’s band, a UK soul singer. Also play in a professional cover band.

Why I play the bass:

I got a 4 string Ibanez for christmas in 1992. Played some drums and guitar before that.

Being versatile and easy to get on with, a good ear and groove.

Jaco Pastorious, Marcus Miller, Arthur Maia, Victor Wooten, Paco de Lucia and many many others.
