Aretha Franklin: “Rolling in the Deep/Ain’t No Mountain” Late Show Performance

Last night, Aretha Franklin took the stage as musical guest on the Late Show with David Letterman. The Queen of Soul, now 72, sang her version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” before she and the band segued into “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

The legendary singer was once again backed by Jerry Jemmott, who began performing with Ms. Franklin in the ’60s (see our Stories Behind the Songs feature for more on that). Jemmott lays down a simple groove and then adds some tasty licks as the energy builds.

The Adele cover and others will be part of Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, scheduled for release on October 21st.

So awesome to see the Queen of Soul still doing her thing at the age of 72.

Aretha looks wonderful. Her voice is still great even if it is not as powerful as it once was. She is still a better singer than 99% of the “competition.”

It is great that she gave Jerry Jemmott the gig. It’s great to know that she has not forgotten the sidemen who helped her make magic. The same goes for the mature backing singers on stage with her too.
