Rob Mullarkey: Just My Imagination

Rob Mullarkey: Just My Imagination

I discovered this video of Rob Mullarkey thanks to Steve Lawson, who called it “properly beautiful.” Rob took “Just My Imagination” – his all time favorite Temptations track – and improvised over it using only his “Lakland 44-51 and an old Boss RC2 looper pedal.” Properly beautiful indeed.

Harmless Funk: Cissy Strut

Harmless Funk: Cissy Strut

It has been a long time since we featured a video with bassist Dave Marks. Time to correct that. Dave just sent me a video with a newer project, Harmless Funk – a jazz/funk quintet he’s been playing with this year. Here they are doing one of the all-time great funk instrumental tunes – the Meters’ “Cissy Strut”.

Ellen Andrea Wang: Perfect Danger

Ellen Andrea Wang: Perfect Danger

One of my favorite musical discoveries in recent memory came from our friend Erlend Øvsttun Amsen, who wrote in suggesting we check out Ellen Andrea Wang. “To make a long story short, she’s a Norwegian double bass player/vocalist who’s done impressive stuff in various genres – often with the band Pixel, but lately with a burgeoning solo career,” he wrote....

Viaceslav Svedov: “Nothing Else Matters” All Bass Cover

Viaceslav Svedov: “Nothing Else Matters” All Bass Cover

Viaceslav Svedov has shared many great solo bass performances over the years. Time for another one. This time around, Viaceslav takes on Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” as a solo bass arrangement.

Hot Tuna: Good Shepherd, Live at Lockn’

Hot Tuna: Good Shepherd, Live at Lockn’

Ever since I spoke with luthier Tom Ribbecke about Jack Casady’s Diana Bass, I’ve been searching for quality videos of the instrument in action. Here’s a fantastic one of Casady with partner-in-crime Jorma Kaukonen performing as Hot Tuna during the Lockn’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia this year. The duo play through a staple of their repertoire, “Good Shepherd,” with thoughtful...

Nina June & Fortheloveofbass: It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming Back)

Nina June & Fortheloveofbass: It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming Back)

We’re excited about a new project called “fortheloveofbass”. Started by Ivo Schot, the concept is to make pop songs work with only a singer and a bassist. “As a musician and bass player, my greatest desire is to connect and communicate. In my opinion the best way to do this, is to play a good song,” he explains. “When a...

Black Dub: Nomad

Black Dub: Nomad

Some time after Black Dub released their self titled album, we featured their video for the tune, “I Believe In You”. I just scored this record on vinyl, prompting me to revisit some of their other videos, with all the bass goodness from Daryl Johnson. Here they are performing “Nomad,” which also appears on the record.

Project RnL: All Stuck-Ups

Project RnL: All Stuck-Ups

I woke up this morning and discovered a Facebook message from Or Lubianiker about Project RnL’s newest video. “Fresh off the RnL oven! And with 2 bass solo’s to boot,” he said. So you can probably guess what I listened to first today. Something else about this video worth noting – it was shot by fans at the band’s recent...

Christine Smit and Eli Mboho: Down

Christine Smit and Eli Mboho: Down

Vocalist Christine Smit and bassist Eli Mboho got together at Berklee’s Red Room @ Cafe 939 and performed this live cover of Emily King’s “Down”. We’ve not seen Eli before, but we’re going to keep our eye out for more from him now.

Cody Wright: Bass Loop Jam

Cody Wright: Bass Loop Jam

We’re all big fans of Cody Wright, thanks in part to his work with Jonathan Scales Fourchestra. So, Cody recently picked up a looper. In what he says was his “first time putting together a loop from scratch on video,” he created a funky groove with plenty of tasty soloing – all while clearly having a lot of fun. With...

Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: Don’t Take That Attitude To Your Grave

Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: Don’t Take That Attitude To Your Grave

Ben Harper has reunited with The Innocent Criminals. Yours truly was thrilled when that news broke, because I’m a huge fan of bassist Juan Nelson (and Harper too). Here’s the group performing “Don’t Take That Attitude To Your Grave”. The footage comes from four different shows. Juan always makes things groove.

Divinity Roxx and Steve Lawson: Masterclass Improv Jam

Divinity Roxx and Steve Lawson: Masterclass Improv Jam

Here’s one to get you jamming. Divinity Roxx and Steve Lawson teamed up to teach a masterclass at Kidderminster College in the UK, resulting in some funky jams. The clip starts with Divinity beatboxing with a foundational bass groove and Lawson adding his signature thoughtful accompaniment and soloing. The duo connects on a deep level, allowing Roxx to freestyle rap...
