“Spinal Tap II” Trailer Reveals Paul McCartney, Elton John, and a New Chapter for Derek Smalls

Spinal Tap II- The End Continues

It’s been 41 years since Spinal Tap first entered the collective consciousness of musicians around the world. The iconic mockumentary gave us quotes like “These go to 11,” and hit songs like the bass-heavy “Big Bottom.” Now the band is getting back together for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which will see the return of (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and the almighty Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer).

The news, which Smalls detailed while supporting his solo album, follows the band as they reunite after 15 years for one final show. A trailer has just been released for the movie, offering insight into the story and confirming the rumored cameos from musicians like Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Questlove. Two details we learn about Smalls in the clip are that he has dropped the infamous double-neck bass for a Lakland Skyline bass, and he has gotten into cryptocurrency.

Smalls, of course, has still been active in music. He released a solo album in 2018 called Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing) and had a subsequent 2019 tour. A deluxe edition of his album dropped in 2023.

The film will have a theatrical release on September 12th. Until then, we’ll be jamming “Big Bottom.”
