Derek Smalls Announces Deluxe Edition of “Smalls Change” with Live Video

Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls (who looks an awful lot like Harry Shearer) has announced a new deluxe version of his solo debut album, Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing). Originally released in 2018, the new version of the record will have two new live tracks recorded in 2019 with the Hungarian Studio Orchestra.
The two new renditions include “She Puts The Bitch in Obituary”, featuring actress Jane Lynch, and “Hell Toupee,” which was recorded with the Hungarian Studio Orchestra. Smalls celebrated the deluxe edition by releasing the live performance video for “Hell Toupee”:
Smalls Change was first described as a “poignant and oftentimes furious contemplation on aging that explores the passing of time and all things loud. The “Big Bottom” bassist was joined by a top-shelf cast of musicians including Donald Fagen, Dweezil Zappa, Rick Wakeman, Richard Thompson, Steve Lukather, Joe Satriani, Waddy Wachtel, Michael League, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Paul Shaffer, Steve Vai, Larry Carlton, Judith Owen, Jane Lynch and The Hungarian Studio Orchestra.
Upon its release, Smalls described the album as “halfway between rage and against the dying of the light and trying to find the light.” A press release explains he now says, “Forget the light… Turn up the sound.”
A full track listing and release date for the deluxe edition of Smalls Change will be announced soon.
