Ron-tober Is Back: Ron Carter Leads 32 Shows at Birdland Jazz Club

It’s that time of year again: Ron-tober is back at Birdland Jazz Club. NEA Jazz Master and bass legend Ron Carter is presenting a full month of shows at the famed New York City club with a whopping 32 performances over four weeks.

“Renowned for his unmatched talent, Ron Carter stands as one of jazz’s most inventive and prolific bassists. With a staggering discography boasting over 2,000 albums, Carter is certified as the most recorded bass player in the history of recorded music,” Birdland writes. “Honored with the prestigious 1998 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship, Carter’s collaborative footprint spans an astonishing spectrum of musical genres, with performances and recordings alongside an eclectic array of artists.”

He’ll once again present four different groups, which will grow in size as the weeks progress. The first set of shows will feature Carter in a duo setting with guitarist Bill Frisell, with whom he recorded the 2006 trio album, Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian.

From October 15th to the 18th, he will feature his New Jazz Trio.

“Following the untimely passing of the great Russell Malone last summer, Carter assembled a new ensemble, which plays for the second consecutive year at Birdland,” a press release explains. “Featuring Carter alongside Grammy-nominated pianist Donald Vega, the New Jazz Trio features NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Donald Harrison.”

Next up will be Carter’s Foursight Quartet with saxophonist Jimmy Greene, pianist Renee Rosnes, and drummer Payton Crossley. Finally, Ron-tober wraps up with the Great Big Band with dates from October 29th to November 1st.

If you can’t make it to New York, every Thursday performance will be streamed at 7 pm on Veeps.
