Chicago Soundcheck: Derek Frank Warms Up with a Wah-Driven Bass Line

Derek Frank knows how to make the most out of a few spare minutes on stage. This clip, captured by No Treble during soundcheck at Andy’s Jazz Club, is a perfect example of how a quick warmup can turn into something worth sticking around for.

Frank is playing a short scale Music Man bass, working a wah pedal into a tight, expressive groove. He is running through a Bergantino head and 212 cabinet, and you can hear that clarity and low end definition right away.  Guitarist Anthony King steps forward with a ripping solo, a flute line floats on top, and the rhythm section is locked in.

It is a reminder that sometimes the best moments happen before the lights go down.

A short from this piece has been getting a bunch of traction HERE.
