Claypool Lennon Delirium Drop Psychedelic Concept Album The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy

Les Claypool‘s big year is rolling on with the release of a new Claypool Lennon Delirium album. The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy is a 14-song concept album described as “a surreal, psychedelic-prog cautionary tale about A.I., empathy, mortality, free will, and what happens when systems are pushed toward pure optimization without any grounding in human feeling.”

It’s the most ambitious effort in Claypool’s band Sean Ono Lennon, which began in 2015. The bassist/vocalist told American Songwriter that it was the hardest record he’d ever made. Part of that comes from the back-and-forth between Claypool and Lennon’s different writing styles.

“We tug at each other,” Claypool told Billboard. “(Lennon) likes to, ‘Let’s add some glockenspiel. Let’s add 12 more layers of vocals…’ If it were up to him, the record probably still would not be done. But that’s what makes it a great partnership. He pushes me into things where I wouldn’t normally go, and I push him into things he wouldn’t normally go.”

The latest video from the project is for “Melody of Entropy,” which features an epic, melodic bass line.

The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy is out now on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (Apple Music, and Amazon Music). The Claypool Lennon Delirium will be on tour starting May 20th as part of the Claypool Gold Tour, which will also feature Claypool’s Flying Frog Brigade and Primus.
