Ron Carter and Richard Galliano Show What Two Masters Can Do with Bass and Accordion
There are some pairings where two musicians are all you need.
Ron Carter and Richard Galliano proved that during this performance of Carter’s “It’s About Time” at the NOSPR Concert Hall in Poland. Carter is simply one of the legends of the bass and hearing him in a setting this open is something special. Galliano joins him on accordion and with just those two instruments they manage to fill the entire room. There is no drummer, no pianist, and nowhere to hide. Carter handles the foundation while also shaping the melody and groove around it.
The two have a long history together. Galliano’s and Carter’s duo album Panamanhattan from 1990, featuring nothing but Galliano on accordion and Carter on double bass. Three decades later, that connection is still on full display here. “It’s About Time” closed the duo set that night and it is a perfect showcase for Carter’s sound, touch, and seemingly effortless command of the instrument.
