Mario Guarini Digs Deep Into Pentatonics with New 524-Page Bass Book

Mario Guarini The Pillars of Electric Bass Pentatonics

Pentatonic scales can be the simplest tools in a bassist’s toolbox, but they can be used to quickly and easily build more complex ideas. Mario Guarini has kicked off his new instructional book series with them in The Pillars of Electric Bass – Volume 1: Pentatonics. The 524-page book features over 600 exercises designed for intermediate, advanced, and professional bass players who “want to transform daily practice into a clear, creative, and deeply personal musical language.”

“From theoretical foundations to advanced applications, this book connects pentatonic scales to harmonic relationships, modal interchange, secondary dominants, Barry Harris harmonic principles, Pat Martino’s minor conversion, Negative Harmony, the Coltrane Matrix, and many other structures that shape contemporary musical language,” Guarini explains. “It also applies these concepts to dozens of well-known tunes and real musical contexts.”

The book is divided into chapters that alternate between technical practice and harmonic awareness, allowing bassists to develop the facility and understanding needed to incorporate the ideas into their playing.

Renowned educator Scott Devine of Scott’s Bass Lessons says, “The Pillars of Electric Bass is incredible, absolutely stacked with awesome exercises and concepts. You can really see the years of playing, teaching and thought that have gone into creating it.”

Mario Guarini’s The Pillars of Electric Bass – Volume 1: Pentatonics is available now in Paperback and eBook formats.
