Dave Holland Celebrates 80 with “Freedom Call” Live Box Set

Dave Holland and Freedom Call Album Cover

Jazz bass master Dave Holland just turned 80, and he celebrated in part by releasing Freedom Call, a six-LP, three-CD collection of previously unreleased live recordings from his career. It features moments from three of his defining ensembles: the Sextet, the Quintet, and Prism.

“Freedom Call captures the collaborative spirit and creative ambition that have defined Dave Holland’s work for more than five decades,” a press release explains. “These live performances bring together some of the most accomplished improvisers of their generation, revealing ensembles built on trust, deep listening and a shared musical language forged over years of collaboration.”

That synergy is evident across the collection, but so is Holland’s unmistakable style. Check out his opening solo on “The Empty Chair” with Prism, which sets up the song’s slinky groove.

Freedom Call is available now on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (Apple Music, and Amazon Music).
