Ten Jimi Hendrix-Inspired Bass Videos
Bassists seem to love to cover Hendrix tunes. We love to cover bassists who cover Hendrix tunes.
So, here are ten of the most popular Hendrix-inspired videos we’ve featured over the last couple of years. Enjoy!
1. Daniel Ziegler: All Bass Version of “Little Wing”
We love new arrangements of Jimi Hendrix tunes, especially when performed as solo bass pieces, and performed well. That’s just what bassist Daniel Ziegler did in his take on the Hendrix classic “Little Wing”.
2. Larry Wilson Street Bass: Voodoo Child
In this video, electric bassist Larry Wilson plays his rendition of “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix. The best part of this video is that Wilson is playing in the New York Subway System, demonstrating that good music can happen anywhere.
3. Jaco Pastorius: Solo, Washington DC (1978)
Here’s another video gem featuring Jaco Pastorius. This solo was performed during a Weather Report concert in 1978 in Washington, DC and includes a cool version of Jaco’s famous “Slang” solo and Hendrix’s Band of Gypsy references.
4. Maurizio Rolli’s Tones Big Band: Little Wing, a tribute to Hiram Bullock
Maurizio Rolli and his Rolli’s Tone Big Band performed a tribute to the late, great guitarist Hiram Bullock earlier this year. Check out the 21-piece big band performing a very unique take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”, live at Pescara Jazz 2009.
5. All Bass Hendrix: The Wind Cries Mary
This bassist is rocking his bass version of Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary”.
6. Viaceslav Svedov: Purple Haze Solo Bass
As long as Viaceslav Svedov keeps producing these videos, we’re going to keep showcasing him. In this video, Viaceslav does his bass-only version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”. Wow.
It is fitting Miles Mosley chose to cover Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”, since he’s doing a Hendrix-like re-invention of his instrument of choice: the upright bass. After all, it isn’t often you get an upright with wah wah, and distortion all at once.
8. Ufo Walter: Machine Gun, Solo Bass Edition
Bassist Ufo Walter sent this video in, featuring him playing the Jimi Hendrix classic “Machine Gun” using a looper and Pitch FX for the lead. Buckle up!
9. Donovan Stokes: Purple Haze
Check out Donovan playing Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze, along with bassist Kevin Johnson and drummer Anthony Flis
10. Voodoo Power: Hendrix/Miller Solo Bass Mashup
While this isn’t the highest quality video out there, we couldn’t pass up the chance to feature it. Bassist Viaceslav Svedov took Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” and Marcus Miller’s “Power” and mashed it up into a great solo bass performance.
cool – I am in great company ;-).
