Tommy Stinson Reunites with Former Replacements Bandmate for Benefit
Tommy Stinson will be reuniting with his former Replacements bandmate Paul Westerberg to benefit guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke earlier this year. The duo will be recording a single as part of a limited edition project of covers songs of Dunlap’s original music done by his friends. The recordings will be split into limited edition 7-inch albums and auctioned off to raise money.
The news continues to stir talks of a full on Replacements reunion, though Stinson has admitted it’s unlikely. The band, which broke up in 1991, has a complicated relationship, not to mention drummer Chris Mars only sticks to art now.
“Paul and I always end up doing things together, but I don’t think there’s any point to a reunion,” Stinson told the Jerusalem Post. “There’s such baggage, more so for Paul. I still think he’s a little bummed out his career didn’t skyrocket after the Mats broke up. He’s had to deal with competing with his past, and for him it was kind of tough.”
