In Memoriam: Chris Friedrich

Chris-Friedrich

Chris Friedrich, bassist for post-rock outfit Caspian, has passed away. The band made the announcement on their website.

“We write to you today with heavy hearts and indescribable sadness to tell you that our bass player, Chris Friedrich, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon,” they wrote. “We have lost a close friend, a true brother, and a presence that can never be replaced in any of our lives. Chris epitomized the heart and soul of Caspian, and in our own ways — both individually and collectively — dedicate ourselves to honoring his memory. We ask for privacy. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Friedrich joined the band in their infancy in 2004 and is featured on all of their releases, including the studio albums The Four Trees, Tertia and Waking Season, which was named “Best Post-Rock Album of 2012” by SPIN magazine.

Caspian will be honoring the bassist during a benefit concert on August 31 in Manchester, New Hampshire at the Engine Room. Friedrich helped plan the show to raise money for his friend who needs a lung transplant. The band is currently scheduled for a European tour this fall, though they have not announced a replacement bassist or whether they will play them at all.
