New Charles Mingus Documentary in Progress
Charles Mingus’ grandson Kevin Ellington Mingus has set out to make a film exploring his grandfather’s life. Mingus on Mingus will be a full-length documentary including interviews with the musicians from bassist/composer’s band and his family and friends, to get a deeper understanding of the jazz icon.
Mingus, who passed away in 1979, had a reputation of being unpredictable and somewhat eccentric.
“There are many perspectives of my grandfather that have not had a place in defining his legacy,” Kevin says. “I am seeking them out to understand him beyond myth, fable or a singular vision of his work.”
The project is currently raising money to continue filming interviews this winter and spring, with a crowd-funding goal of $45,000 by December 18th. To learn more or to donate, visit the Mingus on Mingus Kickstarter page.
