Katie Thiroux: “Oh, What A Beautiful Morning” & “Ray’s Kicks”
There’s a new name in the world of double bass we think you’ll be hearing a lot: Katie Thiroux.
A student of John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, Thiroux has an essence on the double bass that recalls the bluesy, soulful, straight-ahead style of Ray Brown while expressing her own voice.
Here’s a great clip from the Berklee College of Music that features Thiroux in two settings. First, she goes solo on the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” from the 1943 musical Oklahoma! She utilizes the full scale of the instrument all while playing the notes that come to her naturally.
Second, she performs an original entitled “Ray’s Kicks” with the help of guitarist Graham Dechter and drummer Matt Witek. Her commanding walking style drives her bandmates to push themselves and keep listeners on the edge of their seat.
Thiroux’s debut album, Introducing Katie Thiroux, was released earlier this year.
