Beck, Bogert & Appice: Superstition, Live

In 1973, guitarist Jeff Beck, bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice released their studio album, Beck, Bogert & Appice. I’ve been spinning that vinyl a lot lately, which brought me to this video.

In this 1973 performance, the group plays “Superstition”, with Bogert laying down some serious bass while also handling the lead vocals.

Killer.

I love Beck Bogert and Appice. That Album changed how I viewed Rock music, and in particularly rock bass. Tim kicked ass all over this album.

Jeff Beck played the Stevie Wonder album that featured “Superstition,” Talking Book. Beck played on a song, but not Superstition. I read that Beck and Wonder fell out because Wonder would not give Beck first crack at Superstition. Oh well, Stevie knew a hit when he wrote one!

I read something similar. That Jeff was in studio with Stevie, and came up with the beat on the drums, and they collaborated on the composition. Then Jeff and BBA actually recorded Superstition before Stevie. And the rights to the song were retained at the insistance of Stevie’s manager/producer, even though Jeff had substantial input on the songs creation. What I read didn’t go into hard feelings re the rights.

It’s like they siphoned all the funk out of the song and replaced it with a hit-you-over-the- head power trio rock beat. Much prefer this in it’s original funkiness.

I was at the action house the night they switched from the pigeon s to the VF.
    Sad.
