Sean Malone: Cynic’s “Veil of Maya” Bass Playthrough

Sean Malone caught everyone’s attention on Cynic’s debut album Focus in 1993. The prog-metal album’s distinct sound came in part to the bassist’s furious fretless work.

Malone’s time with Cynic didn’t last much longer after the album’s release, though he rejoined the band when they started back up in 2008. In 2014, he put out this instrumental play-through of the song “Veil of Maya,” just to blow our minds once again.

The fretless tone and his distinct style are great to witness up close. Be ready to take notes!

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. So sorry to hear of Sean’s passing. He was one of the most talented, focused and enigmatic students I’ve ever had. I still have his first Chapman Stick.
