Jaco Pastorius Big Band Import CD Available

Jaco Pastorius Big Band: Now & ThenJaco Pastorius’ music, as played in the past and closer to the present, are the focus of Now & Then, the two-CD import set from the Jaco Pastorius Big Band.

Thanks notreble for highlighting this release. I just received my copy (after reading about it here and ordering from Amazon). Let me tell you all, this is an essential addition to any Jaco fan’s collection, perhaps the finest official-release document of Jaco since “The Birthday Concert” came out and every bit as good (It’s essentially vol.2 of “The Birthday Concert”). Too bad it was only released in Japan and not given a U.S. release, because it’s a quality package and the liner notes are done by Peter Erskine (he also produced it) where he adds more from his memories of that two-set gig on December 1, 1981.

While it may look like there are some repeats here from “The Birthday Concert,” don’t be put off. These are the versions from the other set they did that night (whether 1st or 2nd set) that didn’t make the first release, so we now get different takes of “The Chicken” (this one’s funkier and looser) and several others, but it’s our first time hearing Thad Jones/Mel Lewis’ “Quietude,” “Donna Lee” and Bob Mintzer’s “Truth” from that gig. Jaco and the band killed that night.

I haven’t even listed to the “Now” disk yet, I’m still listening to “Then” on constant repeat, and will be for a good long time. But I will be eager to soon.
