Primus Announces New Album, Tour Dates
Primus fans rejoice! Les Claypool and the gang have announced a new album, entitled The Desaturating Seven, will be released on September 29th. It’s their first studio album of original material since 2011’s Green Naugahyde and will feature the band’s classic lineup of Claypool, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander.
The bass guru broke the news to Rolling Stone, explaining that the album’s theme is based on an obscure children’s book called The Rainbow Goblins. “I remember being incredibly impressed with the artwork and the storyline and the content and the message, and I thought, ‘Wow, this would make a great piece of music,'” Claypool told the magazine. “As I’m getting older, I’m realizing I need to start knocking some of these things off my list. So we did the Willy Wonka soundtrack a couple years back, and this was a project I wanted to do.”
As for the album’s sound, we have one clue with the first single: “The Seven.” The song has a strong King Crimson influence, Claypool admits. “It definitely has that Discipline feel,” he said, “but it’s also very reminiscent of [Primus’ 1991 track] ‘Jerry Was a Racecar Driver,’ that tapping and the syncopated bit with me and [guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde]. But all that probably comes from the Crimson influence as well because Crimson was definitely a big influence on the three of us.”
Primus has also announced a fall tour in support of The Desaturating Seven. The Ambushing the Storm tour kicks off October 20th in San Antonio, Texas and will make its way across the U.S. to end up at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, California.
