Editor’s Note: At the end of each year, we tally up all the article and video views on No Treble to come up with a list of the top 10 most popular bassists. This is entirely based on readership, not on opinions, polls, or anything else. Just having some fun.
Tony Levin had some big touring news this year before things shut down. But the news of him touring King Crimson and The Zappa Band. We hope to see this happen in 2021.
Tony’s work was also part of a new King Crimson transcription book, and he even published a book of his own.
Add to that one killer video of him playing with Peter Gabriel and news of a new Liquid Tension Experiment album, Tony landed at the #4 slot on this year’s “Reader Favorite Bassists” list.
King Crimson has announced a new North American tour for 2020 called “We Paint Electric Rhythm Colour.” The six-week outing will see the iconic prog band joined by the Zappa Band, which includes alumni from Frank Zappa’s various bands.
Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” has always been a favorite of mine, pretty much exclusively because of Tony Levin’s epic bass line. Here’s a clip of the band performing the tune at the Fila Forum in Milan, in 2003. (And a bonus video!)
Gabriel Riccio and Trey Gunn have teamed up for the mammoth task of creating a new score book called “King Crimson: The Discipline Era Transcriptions”. The 256-page book features full-band transcriptions from Crimson’s fruitful ’80s era.
Tony Levin is one of the most talented bassists in the world. He also has a knack for photography, which he’s used to document his time in music. Now, he’s announced a new book, “Images from a Life on the Road”, that brings the two passions together.
Listen up, prog fans: Liquid Tension Experiment is back. The incredible supergroup of Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, and Tony Levin have signed to InsideOutMusic and will be releasing a third album in spring 2021.
