Ben Allison, Ted Nash, and Steve Cardenas Release “Healing Power – The Music of Carla Bley”
The creative jazz trio of Steve Cardenas, Ted Nash, and Ben Allison have released their third co-led album, entitled Healing Power – The Music of Carla Bley. The record presents the music of the influential pianist and composer in their own intimate style.
“We play a wide range of Carla Bley tunes written between 1958-1987, including the classics ‘Ida Lupino’ and ‘Lawns’, along with lesser-known compositions such as ‘Ictus’ and ‘Donkey,’” Allison states.
The bassist also shared a note from bassist/composer Steve Swallow, who is Bley’s life partner and longtime musical partner. “After listening to Healing Power intently for several minutes, Carla, as is her custom, condensed a paragraph of response into two words: ‘That’s me,’” Swallow says. “Not ‘I wrote that’ or ‘that’s my music.’ I know nobody more careful with words (or notes) than Carla, and ‘that’s me’ speaks volumes. She writes to serve improvisors, and to receive such service in return is a dream come true.”
