Josh Cohen: Toots Thielemans’ “Bluesette” Solo Bass Arrangement
Back in January, bassist Josh Cohen shared his terrific story in our Reader Spotlight series. Josh is back with this new video of him performing a solo bass arrangement of the Toots Thielemans standard, “Bluesette”. “Bluesette” was first recorded by Toots in 1962, with him whistling and playing guitar in unison. Here’s the original from The Whistler & His Guitar:
Alita Moses: “Miracle” Cover, with Matt Keppler
Bassist Matt Keppler shared this video with us – and this one grooves. “Recently, I wrote and recorded an arrangement of Kimbra’s new single, ‘Miracle,’” he shared. “The track came out super funky, and I’m really proud of it. I wanted to reach out and share the video with you guys, as I feel that your regular readers will dig...
DaBeat & Miki Santamaria: Man in the Mirror
We’ve seen some great grooves and solo bass from Miki Santamaria before. In this video, his incredible playing is in support of vocalist DaBeat, in this duo’s take of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. Enjoy.
Edmond Gilmore: Continuum
Edmond Gilmore has spent lots of time studying the fantastic playing of Jaco Pastorius. We’ve featured his take on several Jaco songs, and now he’s back with a gorgeous version of “Continuum,” from the bass master’s self-titled album. Check it out:
Zander Zon: Skrillex “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” Solo Bass Performance
Good news! Zander Zon looks to be well recovered from his recent injury and back to playing his incredible bass arrangements. This time around, Zander is performing an all-bass cover of “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” by the dubstep group, Skrillex. “The melody lines were what interested me about the piece,” Zander shares. “I thought it could work well with...
Nathan Navarro: The Beatles’ “Because” Solo Bass Arrangement
I always love it when Nathan Navarro puts out a new video, and this is one of my favorites. He takes the classic Beatles tune “Because” and perfectly captures its ethereal vibe with a heavy reverb. Navarro shared the video on his Facebook page noting, “Here’s an interesting quote from John Lennon: ‘Yoko was playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ on the...
Aretha Franklin: “Rolling in the Deep/Ain’t No Mountain” Late Show Performance
Last night, Aretha Franklin took the stage as musical guest on the Late Show with David Letterman. The Queen of Soul, now 72, sang her version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” before she and the band segued into “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The legendary singer was once again backed by Jerry Jemmott, who began performing with Ms. Franklin...
Federico Malaman: Doctor Mike
Bassist Federico Malaman sent me his brand new video of him doing a cover of a tune by another terrific Italian bassist, Pippo Matino. The tune is “Doctor Mike”, which Pippo wrote as a dedication to guitarist Mike Stern. The first video below is Federico’s cover. The second one is the original. To both I say, “Holy smokes!”
Berklee Alumni 2014 Reunion: Actual Proof
During the 2014 Berklee Alumni concert, drummed Harvey Mason performed Herbie Hancock’s “Actual Proof” with the help of two bassists, Matt Garrison and Rueben Rogers. And these guys brought it. The rest of the band includes Hailey Niswanger on sax, Jetro Da Silva on piano and Jeff Lockhart on guitar.
Michele della Malva: Eldridge Mach 2 x Aeon
Michele della Malva is a big fan of bassist Evan Marien (as are we). So when he bought some new music software, he decided to give it a trial run with a cover of two of Marien’s tunes: “Eldridge Mach 2” and “Aeon”. Michele created his own unique take on the tunes, and blended them together. He’s playing a Zoid...
Alun Vaughan: “Bohemian Rhapsody” Solo Bass Arrangement
About three years ago, bassist Alun Vaughan shared a video of Simon Fitzpatrick performing an all-bass arrangement of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Alun just shared with us his own take on the tune, also arranged for solo bass. “A quick demo of my solo arrangement of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. (Apologies for a couple of synching issues that I couldn’t fix),” Alun...
Dominique Muzeau: “A Day in the Life” Solo Bass Arrangement
French bassist and No Treble reader Dominique Muzeau sent in this serene solo bass version of the classic McCartney/Lennon song “A Day in the Life,” and I’m glad he did. “I play a Takamine B10 bass and a while ago I was looking for some other players of this instrument on the web,” he wrote. “[I couldn’t find] something very...
