Simon Fitzpatrick: Flight of the Bumblebee… on Bass

Simon Fitzpatrick: Flight of the Bumblebee… on Bass

I don’t know what to say, other than “Watch this and hold on to your hats!”

Nico Aranda: “Get Lucky” Solo Bass Cover

Nico Aranda: “Get Lucky” Solo Bass Cover

Our Twitter friend Valeria Lecko sent this video to us, and it looks like Jim Bennett is inspiring bassists out there with his all-bass Daft Punk covers. This is Nico Aranda showing off some excellent technique – and some cool videography – in his performance of “Get Lucky”.

Steve Jenkins: Sphere

Steve Jenkins: Sphere

Prepare to have your face melted. Steve Jenkins just released this video for the track “Sphere” from his latest album, Steve Jenkins and the Coaxial Flutter. Using some gnarly overdrive, the bassist wastes no time in ripping it up with a heavily syncopated slap riff. The song takes a chilled out intermission before coming back with even heavier riffs.

Bruno Tauzin: Palm Muted Fretless Bass Groove

Bruno Tauzin: Palm Muted Fretless Bass Groove

Bruno Tauzin sent us this video of himself jamming out a smooth fretless bass groove on his Ibanez Gary Willis Signature bass. The laid back track has the bassist playing some soulful licks and a double-time feel to spice things up.

Bryan Ladd, Justin Stanton and Jason Patterson: Havona

Bryan Ladd, Justin Stanton and Jason Patterson: Havona

Bassist Bryan Ladd sent us this terrific video, which offers up a nice arrangement of the Jaco Pastorius tune, “Havona”. Bryan is joined by Justin Stanton on the Fender Rhodes and Jason Patterson on drums. And these guys are tight! Bryan takes an incredible solo too. I’ve watched this several times already. I bet you will too.

Bass Jam Collaboration: Mercy Mercy Mercy

Bass Jam Collaboration: Mercy Mercy Mercy

Chad Villar sent us this video of a duet he performed with Jim Joel Santos of the great Joe Zawinul tune, “Mercy Mercy Mercy”. These guys do such a terrific job, and it reminds me of another great bass duet of this tune from the archives.

Tania Maria: “A Felicidade” Live at Java Jazz Festival 2005

Tania Maria: “A Felicidade” Live at Java Jazz Festival 2005

Wow, I’m so glad I stumbled upon this video… it takes me way back to high school when I had some Tania Maria cassettes (yes, old school). This is Tania and her band at the Java Jazz Festival in 2005, performing “A Felicidade” with bassist Marc Bertaux kicking things off.

Miki Santamaria: Tears

Miki Santamaria: Tears

Miki Santamaria is back, this time with one of his own compositions. He said he doesn’t usually write songs. We think he should do it more often.

Ojay: Funky Newcastle Street Performance

Ojay: Funky Newcastle Street Performance

We’ve featured Ojay before, with one of his awesome solo bass performances on a Newcastle street in the UK. Here’s another, recorded back in 2011. I’ve played out in the cold before, and I’m sitting here wondering how in the world Ojay is doing what he’s doing. Looks nasty out there.

OM: State of Non-Return

OM: State of Non-Return

Our friend Lyall Storey sent us this video of OM performing “State of Non-Return,” saying the doom metal band is a prime example of “no treble”. OM consists of just a rhythm section with Al Cisneros on bass and vocals, Emil Amos on drums and Robert Lowe on percussion. Cisneros delivers his signature thick, crushing riffs throughout the song. “He...

How to Play A Funky Bass Line

How to Play A Funky Bass Line

Thomas Risell, the man best known as MarloweDK sent me this video over the holidays. It starts off – appropriately – with MarloweDK saying “How to play a funky bass line”. This is a demo of a theme song Thomas wrote for a TV program about social media. So it is fitting one of the best known bassists on Youtube...

The Dad Guitar

The Dad Guitar

I’ve been watching Flight of the Conchords a bit over the holidays and discovered this scene from the show’s second season. As the band warms up in their “dressing room”, band manager Murray Hewitt questions Bret on the whereabouts of his guitar. Then he goes on to describe the bass in epic fashion.
