Viaceslav Svedov: “Tommy the Cat” Cover

We’ve been following Viaceslav Svedov for some time now, and his videos are always highly entertaining to us. Viaceslav brings it all: amazing arrangements, amazing playing and amazing energy (including some epic bass faces). He took on a beast of a tune this time around, Primus’ “Tommy the Cat”, which of course features the one and only Les Claypool.

Jim Joel Santos: Solo Bass

Jim Joel Santos: Solo Bass

Bassist Jim Joel Santos sent us this video of him performing an untitled solo bass tune which really knocked us out. We loved the composition, harmonics, tapping and technique. Well done, Jim! (He’s not left handed, by the way… his camera was set to mirror mode).

Jesús Rico Pérez: “Reconciliación (Reproches Part II)” for Solo Bass

Last month we featured an incredibly well done Michael Manring cover by Jesús Rico Pérez. Michael himself even shared his thoughts with us on the performance. Here’s another stunning video by Jesús, this time performing one of his own tunes. Using picollo strings and alternate tunings on his 5-string, here’s “Reconciliación (Reproches Part II)”.

Here they are performing the tune “Actual Proof”. Marcus...

Fernando Molinari: “Taffontry 20mg” Country/Fusion Slap Bass

Fernando Molinari: “Taffontry 20mg” Country/Fusion Slap Bass

Yes, you read that right: Country/Fusion slap bass. Brazilian bassist Fernando Molinari posted this play-along of the song “Taffontry 20mg” from his album Identidade, which is kind of like a honky tonk song on speed. More of the fusion part of the equation comes out at 1:55 when Molinari plays some blazing tapping lines in unison with the guitar. I’m...

Joe Osborn Birthday Celebration: Two Great Videos

Joe Osborn Birthday Celebration: Two Great Videos

Today is birthday of legendary bassist Joe Osborn, so we thought we’d share a couple of videos to help celebrate. The first one is an isolated track – vocals, drums and bass on the Carpenters hit “Close to You”. This one offers up a pretty simple bass line with some tasty licks throughout. But as the case with all great...

Testament: Souls Of Black, Live in 2005

“Souls of Black” has one of my all time favorite metal bass intros. Greg Christian lays it down with a big, round tone on Testament’s 2005 DVD Live in London. Have a favorite metal bass line? Post it in the comments!

Michel Alibo: Djou Djou

Michel Alibo: Djou Djou

Our friend Joachim Mahoudeaux sent us this video, saying: “France has been lucky in the 90’s to see emerging huge bass players from world jazz/fusion music, as Linley Marthe (brought from Mauritius to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris by François Jeanneau), Richard Bona or Etienne M’Bappé with UltraMarine combining Afro/Latin/Caribbean musis with Asian influence from the guitarist...
