Aaron Gibson: Love
If you’ve heard the music of Aaron Gibson, you’ll know why he’s one of our favorite bassists here at No Treble HQ. Here’s Aaron performing his original composition, “Love”. The song is also available on .
Olivier Babaz: “Teen Town” on Double Bass and Kalimba
There’s something very satisfying about the combination of bass and kalimba. Olivier Babaz plays both simultaneously (not to mention a foot shaker) in this chilled out rendition of the Jaco Pastorius tune “Teen Town.” Talk about coordination!
Vulfpeck Tour Vlog: Joe Dart & the Guys Get Funky
During Vulfpeck’s tour, they had the night off in Tulsa. But a night off doesn’t stop these guys from getting funky. Joined by Cory Wong on guitar, the band put together one epic jam. As usual, bassist Joe Dart delivers big time. Jack Stratton told me they were “going for a Bernard Edwards tone”. Oh yeah.
Kenneth Dahl Knudsen: Beautify
Back in July, Flemming shared an incredible video of an incredible tune by Kenneth Dahl Knudsen. I didn’t make it through halfway through that video before I bought Kenneth’s album, Clockstopper. Here’s another great song and performance filmed during the same concert. “Beautify” is harder hitting than “Tucked In”, but just as great.
Clatter: Tree of Secrets
Who doesn’t love some gritty Rickenbacker tone? Here’s a great example from Clatter bassist/vocalist Amy Humphrey, who rocks it out on their song “Tree of Secrets.”
Sean Martinez: Interconnected
Sean Martinez has a new EP called Omnipotent Dream coming out soon, and he’s been dropping some teasers from the upcoming release. Here’s an awesome video of Martinez playing along with the track “Interconnected,” which features some gorgeous tapping, ambient effects, and gnarly distortion for a spacey vibe.
Pino Palladino: The Story Behind “Wherever I Lay My Hat” Bass Line
“Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)” was first recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1962. Twenty-one years later, Paul Young released his version, which went on to become a major hit thanks in large part to Pino Palladino and his fretless bass. In this video, Pino tells the story behind the song, as do others who were there. I...
Jim Bennett: Daft Bass… Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Jim Bennett is hard at work on his “Daft Bass” project. Here’s the latest – an all-bass cover of the Daft Punk song, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”, from the album Discovery. Jim said “Sorry for the jump cuts in the middle, I mixed two takes which I thought felt better.” We hardly noticed! (But we did notice his rocking a...
Janek Gwizdala: “Once I Knew” Live
Back in May, Janek Gwizdala performed with Bob Reynolds, Alan Pasqua and Peter Erskine at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles. This tune, “Once I Knew” features an incredible intro by Janek, who eventually creates a loop to solo over with bass and voice. “Once I Knew” is one of the tracks on Janek’s album, Theatre By The Sea. David Pastorius: Tech N9ne’s “Worldwide Choppers”
David Pastorius recently wowed us all with his performance of Tech N9ne’s “Questions”. He’s at it again. Here’s David adding his thing to Tech N9ne’s “Worldwide Choppers”.
Jesús Rico Pérez: “Still Silhouette” Cover
Jesús Rico Pérez is a bassist we discovered earlier this year thanks to his cover of Michael Manring’s “Come With Me, My Love”, and later, his own original compositions. Here’s Jesús once again, performing a cover of Jeff Schmidt’s “And I Crumble”. [Editor’s note: we featured Jeff performing this tune in April.] Great tune, great performance, and you gotta love...
Led Zeppelin’s Celebration Day: “Black Dog” Live
A little over a year ago, Led Zeppelin released Celebration Day, recorded when the surviving members reunited for a 2007 concert. The lineup included singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones. Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham, is on drums. Man, I dig JPJ’s tone on this performance of “Black Dog”.
