Robert “Bubby” Lewis: Interview & Bass Solos

Gallien-Krueger is kicking off a new series of videos with their artists, starting with Robert “Bubby” Lewis. The bassist shares how he got his start in music, his big break of working with Snoop Dogg, and his advice for musicians. Afterwards, Lewis improvises two beautifully melodic bass solos.

Gheorghe Postoronca: Crazy Train

Gheorghe Postoronca: Crazy Train

No, it’s not the famed Ozzy Osbourne song, but Gheorghe Postoronca’s “Crazy Train” is epic. The bassist combines a deep pocket with some extended techniques to make a catchy solo bass tune. “Crazy Train” will be featured on Postoronca’s upcoming second solo album.

Vagner Faria: Tempo Bom

Vagner Faria: Tempo Bom

Our friend Tiago Miller sent us this video of the talented Brazilian bassist (and Tiago’s teacher) Vagner Faria. Tiago shared “This guy is phenomenal. He is the winner of the 9th edition of the BDMG Instrumental Award, an important award for instrumental music in Brazil.” The video was recorded for the BOSS Brasil Loop contest in 2012, featuring a tune...

Blake Branch: “For Once In My Life” Bass Line

Blake Branch: “For Once In My Life” Bass Line

It has been quite a while since we’ve featured a video by Blake Branch. This one is actually over three years old, but is well worth sharing. Blake transcribed the complete bass line on Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life,” which of course was masterfully played by James Jamerson. Almost as impressive is the tone Blake gets from his...

Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters Featuring Marcus Miller: Hang Up Your Hang Ups

Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters Featuring Marcus Miller: Hang Up Your Hang Ups

My pal Seth introduced me to this song a few years ago, and for some reason it always makes me think of New York City. We featured this song with Paul Jackson before, but this version is taken from Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters 2005 tour with Marcus Miller holding down the low end. Marcus takes a solo starting around the 5:30...

Spare Parts: Quarter Pulse

Spare Parts: Quarter Pulse

Our friend Steven Smith sent this in to us, saying “I just discovered a new band – new to me, that is – Spare Parts. Great 70s groove! The bassist is Colin Scott, [and he’s] layin’ it down on the Fender Jazz. Sweet!” Sweet indeed. Love that old school sound.

Juraj Griglak and Stanley Clarke Jam (1985)

Juraj Griglak and Stanley Clarke Jam (1985)

The incredibly talented Slovakian bassist Juraj Griglak just posted this awesome video from the 1985 Bratislava Jazz Festival. Griglak got to hop on stage to jam out with the Stanley Clarke Band and ripped up some crazy slap lines. Clarke shouts, “we got a good one!” just before jumping into the action himself. Too cool.

Jaco Pastorius’ “Chromatic Fantasy”, Latin Style

Jaco Pastorius’ “Chromatic Fantasy”, Latin Style

Hüseyin Karaca shared this video with us with a simple note: “Thank you Jaco Pastorius.” Written by Bach and reimagined for solo bass by Jaco on his Word of Mouth album, Hüseyin has remade “Chromatic Fantasy” into a Latin style piece featuring bass and percussion, along with percussionist Mehmet Arslan.

Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive, Featuring Dane Alderson: The Red Cat

Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive, Featuring Dane Alderson: The Red Cat

Dane Alderson is one of my favorite bassists, and this video is a great example of why. Recorded with Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive at the Charles Hotel in Perth in 2011, Alderson fills out the groove perfectly with a round, modern tone and tasteful fills. He then takes an extended solo starting at 6:15 with lots of great twists and turns...

Matt Gruebner: “Hey Jude” Solo Bass Performance

Matt Gruebner: “Hey Jude” Solo Bass Performance

I randomly stumbled upon the work of Matt Gruebner – aka Maxgroover – over the weekend. His solo bass performance of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” really knocked me out. Matt is performing this on a Nash Jazz bass.

Byron: “Zeitgeist” Live Bass Cam

Byron: “Zeitgeist” Live Bass Cam

I really love bass cams. Sometimes they make you feel a little dizzy, but the perspective is so cool. Here’s a bass cam video of bassist László Demeter playing with his band, byron. Demeter pins down the low end for the song “Zeitgeist,” which was recorded during their New Year’s Eve gig at Clubul Taranului in Bucharest.

Tristan: MoonTune

Tristan: MoonTune

Our friend Helge Rudolph sent this one, saying “fresh stuff from Europe. Maybe you’ll like it?!” Heck yeah! This band is tight, and bassist Frans Vollink is laying down one nice groove.
