Doug Alexis: The Chicken
Facebook friend Art Araya shared this remarkable and unique video of bassist Doug Alexis performing his own take on “The Chicken”. The tune, written by Pee Wee Ellis, was made popular of course by Jaco Pastorius. This has to be the most creative version we’ve heard yet.
Amy LaVere: Damn Love Song
My good friend Aaron shared this video with us (he’s a treble-maker, but we overlook it when he sends us cool bass videos). This is bassist/vocalist Amy LaVere and her band performing “Damn Love Song” at the Music Fog Marathon 2011 at Threadgill’s South in Austin, Texas. This was recorded during SXSW 2011. The tune comes from LaVere’s 2011 album,...
Viaceslav Svedov: “No Woman, No Cry” All Bass Cover
Viaceslav Svedov typically offers super high energy takes on a variety of all-bass cover tunes. Here, he shows a more laid back style with one terrific cover of Bob Marley’s beautiful “No Woman, No Cry”. Is there anything Viaceslav can’t do? Editor’s note: We loved this so much, we decided to transcribe it. Check it out.
The Aristocrats: Erotic Cakes (Plus Smartphone Jam) – Live
Recorded live at Musicians Institute just five days ago, here’s The Aristocrats tearing it up during a private concert for students. Bryan Beller lays down the low end for the group, with Guthrie Govan on guitar and Marco Minnemann on drums. Now that’s a power trio! Be sure to stick around for the 2:13 mark, where the band incorporates smart...
Anthony Crawford: Solo from Bass Bash 2012
The Bass Bash is an annual concert coinciding with NAMM, and it’s a great hang to meet bassists and listen to some killing music. Here’s a great clip from the first night of the event of Anthony Crawford’s solo while his band played “Whatever It Is” by Soulive. His band is rounded out by Ron Allen on drums, Kamasi Washington...
Armin Metz: “Sanskar Valley” Solo Bass Performance
Facebook friend Luke Morris shared this video of bassist Armin Metz performing the tune “Sanskar Valley” on his Neuser bass. Armin is the bassist for Imogen Heap. Armin said “There is rarely footage with Imogen where?you see me playing, but you can hear me in most of the ones [from] 2010.” Have a video you’d like to share? Send it...
Snoop Dogg, Featuring Bubby Lewis: Get The Funk Out Of My Face
Here’s a cool clip of Robert “Bubby” Lewis getting down with Snoop Dogg on The Late Show with David Letterman. The band performs Snoop’s take on the classic Brothers Johnson tune “Get the Funk Out of My Face” while Lewis lays down a solid low end with some really tasteful runs. The tune of course was co-written by Quincy Jones,...
Evan Brewer: “A Climate For Change,” Live at NAMM 2012
It’s been a few days, but I’m still reeling from all the bass greatness that was NAMM 2012. One of my highlights was meeting solo bassist Evan Brewer while cruising the halls. Here’s a terrific clip of Evan performing his song “A Climate for Change” during his clinic at the ESP booth. The mellow tune is the closing track from...
Electric Hot Tuna: “Candyman” Live
In December, 1994, Hot Tuna performed live at the Filmore. That concert ultimately made it to DVD as Electric Hot Tuna: Live At The Fillmore. Here’s the band performing “Candyman” that night, with a nifty bass solo by the one and only Jack Casady.
Alex Bershadsky: Groove Move
Here’s an intense jam by bassist Alex Bershadsky, whose incredible groove is matched equally by his impressive technique. The clip features Gal Gershovsky on drums. When you groove it, you gotta move it!
Etta James with the Grateful Dead and the Tower of Power Horns: Live Performance (1982)
Two days ago I was sitting in the hotel lobby before heading out to the NAMM show and saw a news alert that singer Etta James had passed away. She would have been 74 on Wednesday. Facebook friend Crystal Gloistein shared this video from New Years Eve 1982 featuring one incredible line up: Etta James on vocals, the Grateful Dead...
Matthew Garrison’s 4-Finger Technique How-To
Here’s one to keep you in the woodshed for a while. Bassist Matthew Garrison posted this great video explaining his 4-finger right hand technique, which he developed during his time with Joe Zawinul’s band. While he says that the 2-finger technique creates a fatter sound, the 4-finger technique allows for playing lines at mind-boggling speeds.
