Les Claypool rocks the bass banjo on this live performance of “Iowan Gal”, a tune written for his “wonderous, lovely wife”, Chaney Claypool. “Iowan Gal” is from Claypool’s album.

In this 1990 video, bassist Charlie Haden talks about improvisation before performing the Charlie Parker tune “Barbados”, with Phil Woods, Hilton Ruiz and Art Farmer. At the end of the clip, Haden talks about the electric bass as well, and his take on finding an identity with an amplified instrument.

Checking out videos featuring bassist Bakithi Kumalo this morning, I ran into this old favorite from Paul Simon’s Graceland concert in South Africa in 1987. Kumalo’s fretless work on this and the rest of the performance is so awesome, even 24 years later.

Christian McBride is one of those rare bassists who switch from upright to electric and back with ease. We more frequently see (and feature) him playing upright, but this one was too fun to pass up. Here’s a fan shot video of McBride taking a solo break to Jaco Pastorius’ “Havona”.

Joseph Garcia sent in this video of bassist Wally Voss, a shredding master who spent time in the ’80s touring with Yngwie Malmsteen. Here is a face-melting solo he played with the band Front Runner, before joining Malmsteen. “This is a must-see for fans of Cliff Burton and Billy Sheehan,” Garcia wrote, and we couldn’t agree more!

We last featured bassist Daniel Ziegler and his Jonas Hellborg-inspired bass arrangement of “Little Wing”. This time, Daniel performs his unique take on Victor Wooten’s “Slow Groove”.

Mina Burnside is a 14 year old bassist from Nashville who began playing three and a half years ago. In this clip, she takes on a monster of a bass tune: Jaco Pastorius’ “Portrait of Tracy”. We love seeing (and sharing!) the many young players who demonstrate their dedication and willingness to tackle some tough tunes and show the world....

Derek Frank leads off his bass-only intro for “Billie Jean” in this live performance of the bassist’s arrangement of the Michael Jackson tune. Recorded live in Studio City, CA in September, 2010.

For the final session of Euro Bass 2004, bassists Matthew Garrison, Darryl Jones, Mike Pope, Linley Marthe and Pippo Matino took the stage, with drummer Claudio Romano for this bass-powered performance. Marthe’s solo at the beginning is the bomb.

Here’s a pretty cool solo bass piece by upright bassist Hartmut Kracht, who adds a little to the performance by playing his upright like a bass guitar. I used to get in trouble for this in orchestra class back in the day!
