Maurizio Rolli and his Rolli’s Tone Big Band performed a tribute to the late, great guitarist Hiram Bullock earlier this year. Check out the 21-piece big band performing a very unique take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”, live at Pescara Jazz 2009.

SMV: Live at Vitoria Gasteiz Jazz Fest

Here’s a great video of SMV (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten) live at the Vitoria Gasteiz Jazz Festival, earlier this year. Or in the words of Marcus Miller: “We have a lot of bass for you. We hope you like bass.”

The Bazantar

The Bazantar

What do you get when you mix an upright bass with a sitar? The Bazantar, of course. Here, Mark Deutsch plays his instrument and explains the creation of it.

Cobham/Duke Band: Red Baron

Here we go… a little Alphonso Johnson to start off the weekend. This performance, filmed on July 6, 1976 in Montreux, Switzerland, is the Bill Cobham / George Duke Band playing “Red Baron”. The band includes Billy Cobham on drums, George Duke on keyboards, John Scofield on guitar and Johnson on bass. Holy smokes!

Zawinul Syndicate with Richard Bona: Carnavalito

Zawinul Syndicate with Richard Bona: Carnavalito

The Zawinul Syndicate’s performance at the North Sea Jazz festival in 1997 included Richard Bona on bass, and all of the videos I’ve seen from that performance have been stellar. This live performance of “Carnavalito”, originally recorded on the album, features Zawinul’s Weather Report bandmate Manolo Badrena on percussion and vocals, with newcomers Paco Sery on drums and Gary Poulson...

Charles Mingus: Flowers For A Lady

I’ve been on a Charles Mingus kick lately, watching a ton of great videos like this one. This performance of “Flowers for a Lady” was filmed on July 28, 1974 at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Todi, Italy. Mingus is joined by Dannie Richmond on drums, Don Pullen on piano, George Adams on tenor sax and Hamiet Bluiett on baritone...

Here’s bassist Avishai Cohen and his trio, including pianist Shai Maestro and drummer Mark Guiliana, performing an original composition “Eleven Wives”. The tune appears on the trio’s Gently Disturbed album.
