Top 10: The Best Bass Videos (May 2011)
This week, we’re taking a look back at the top 10 most popular bass videos from May, 2011, based on the number of views by No Treble readers.
1. Victor Wooten & JD Blair: Live at Blue Note Milan
Filmed from the audience two days ago, here’s Victor Wooten and JD Blair playing the tune, “U Can’t Hold No Groove…” as their finale. The tune is from the album A Show of Hands, recently re-released.
2. Ain’t No Sunshine: John Mayer Trio Live with Pino Palladino
Recorded during the 2010 Crossroads Festival, here’s the John Mayer Trio performing the Bill Wither’s classic, “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Pino Palladino really lays down a nice groove, along with drummer Steve Jordan. This performance was included on the Crossroads Festival DVD.
3. Crash Kings: Evolution of Guitar – With No Guitar
Brothers Mike Beliveau (bass) and Tony Beliveau (keyboards and vocals) formed the trio The Crash Kings with drummer Jason Morris. 4. Nathan Navarro: Electronica Bass
Last time we featured Nathan Navarro, it caused quite a stir (in a good way). Here, Nathan shows off his skills and creativity with a tune he wrote, aptly named “Electronica Bass”.
We discovered this video thanks to MarloweDK, featuring bassist Ron Hall taking an extended bass solo, live at a club in Chicago. Funky!
Here’s a funky clip of Danish bassist Lars Danielsson grooving hard with just him, a drum machine, and his trusty old Fender Jazz. Danielsson effortlessly floats between styles, and wraps it up by playing around with the last lick from Donna Lee.
7. Melvin Lee Davis with Lee Ritenour: Rio Funk
There’s nothing like a nice jam to start your day. Here, Melvin Lee Davis lays down some funky slap grooves on guitarist Lee Ritenour’s tune Rio Funk from the Northsea Jazz Festival in 2009. The man is groovin’ so hard, you can tell even with the sound muted!
8. Oteil Burbridge: Live Bass Solo
Here’s Oteil Burbridge taking a solo live during an Allman Brothers Band concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York on March 18, 2011. This a fan shot video (iPhone), synced with the soundboard recording.
9. Andres Rotmistrovsky: She’s Mine
Andres Rotmistrovsky adapted a tune entitled “She’s Mine” by Fito Paez for solo bass. Here’s Andres performing it. Dig the tone!
10. Dani Weber: Don’t Look Too Far
Whenever a Dani Weber video hits our radar, I always find myself impressed not only with his bass playing, but also his compositions. Here, Dani performs his solo bass piece “Don’t Look Too Far”.
