Watch: Leprous Transforms “Take On Me” With Brooding, Bass-Driven Intensity

Norwegian prog metal band Leprous took on A-ha’s iconic synth pop hit “Take On Me” for Musora’s Covers on the Spot series. They replaced the song’s bright and bouncy feel with a brooding and cinematic sound that is all their own.

The video is more than just a performance. It follows the band as they develop their arrangement from the very first ideas to the final take. You get to watch them experiment with harmony, texture, and pacing until the song has been completely reshaped into their style.

Bassist Simen Børven holds the low end with authority on his Fender Precision Bass Player II Series, giving the track a deep and growling presence that’s a far cry from the original’s buoyant groove. By the end, it feels like a brand new piece of music that still tips its hat to the original.
