Puscifer’s “Normal Isn’t” Goes Deep: Tony Levin and Greg Edwards Anchor Its Dark Groove

It’s been five years since Puscifer put out a studio album, but that’s about to change. The band, led by Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, has announced Normal Isn’t will be dropping on February 6th. It will be a foray into their post-punk influences while “pushing into darker, more guitar-driven territory.”

“We’re definitely leaning into our early influences,” Keenan shares. “It’s the place where goth meets punk. It’s where I came from.”

Puscifer’s official lineup is rounded out by Carina Round and Mat Mitchell, who handles most bass duties in the studio. While Keenan has always shaped the band’s sound, Normal Isn’t brought about a new songwriting style. The singer built his own digital recording system and created full-fledged demos before sharing them with his bandmates.

“Instead of just saying, ‘I want this to sound like Fleetwood Mac on cocaine if they had a baby with PJ Harvey,’ Maynard was showing us his intention, which was really cool,” Round explains. “In Puscifer, any idea can totally change without any preciousness, and everybody is on board – not unlike an insane asylum. We found each other because we’re demented in a symbiotic way.”

Normal Isn’t reflects this time we are living in,” Keenan adds. “As storytellers and artists, our job is to observe, interpret, and report. We take in our environment and share what we see, and what we see around us does not appear normal. Not by a long shot.”

The album features a host of guest contributors, including drummers Gunnar Olsen, Sarah Jones, and Danny Carey. Former touring bassist Greg Edwards appears on the record as well as bass legend Tony Levin, who provided the low end on the title track and “Seven One.”

In addition to the record announcement, Puscifer has unveiled a huge North American tour that will stretch from March to May.
