Bass Gym: A Bach-Inspired Bass Exercise for Dexterity, Stamina, and Sequencing

If you have been following my bass journey, you will probably be well aware of my affinity for classical music, especially the works of J.S. Bach. I love the intricate melodies, challenging structures, complex fingerings, and richness of his cello compositions. They work really well on the bass, too. In fact, they are quite popular in the bass community, with many excellent bass players adapting Bach’s music.

I wrote this little exercise for one of my students as extra study material for our Bach analysis. While working on a bass arrangement of the C minor Prelude, we discovered a pattern that produces sort of arpeggiator keyboard sounds. You press one key and it plays the full sequence.

I used this Bach sequence to create more versions in the C minor Aeolian scale (C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B♭, C).

The first two bars are variations on the A and D strings, playing the four-note sequence 1, 6, 5, 6 on each note of the scale. Bars 3–6 are descending sequences using the D and G strings with a slightly longer pattern.

Bars 7 and 8 will challenge your sequencing skills on the A and E strings, followed by beautiful descending melodic lines on the A and D strings in bars 9–12.

The epic ending is enhanced by strumming a C power chord.

This piece is all about dexterity and stamina in your left hand, as you will be challenging your weaker finger combinations. It is also a good memory exercise, as you should be able to memorise the whole page.

I encourage you to experiment with your own variations and Bach vibes. It’s beautiful, and it will take your technique to the next level.
