MonoNeon Bridges Church and P-Funk on “Tha Dumb Stuff”

MonoNeon Tha Dumb Stuff Album Cover

MonoNeon‘s prolific output continues this month with a new album called Tha Dumb Stuff. The eight-song collection once again features his Grandma Liz and funk legend George Clinton in a mix of hymns and heavy grooves.

“From the sounds of an Orange Mound Baptist church to P-Funk and everywhere in between, Tha Dumb Stuff album is MonoNeon making and sharing music on his own terms,” his Bandcamp states.

The album opens with Grandma Liz singing “This Little Neon Light of Mine” as MonoNeon’s signature pitch-shifting reframes the 100-year-old gospel tune. “Oblivion (When the World is Tossing Me)” takes a darker, introspective turn with a slower tempo to match.

MonoNeon built the song around the title track, which was recorded in 2022 and released earlier this year. Check out this behind-the-scenes footage of MonoNeon in the studio with Clinton as they build the track’s “off-kilter funk, Southern soul textures, and experimental minimalism.”

Tha Dumb Stuff is available now on Bandcamp.
